Should you fact-check your grandma’s Facebook posts?

Four months ago, I decided to become a kind of truth avenger and fact-check every link, meme and news story that appeared on my Facebook feed by a family member, high-school friend or former sorority sister.

Should you fact-check your grandma’s Facebook posts? – Lyz Lenz – Aeon.

This is a fascinating read, but, in the end, one is left with the depressing feeling that Lyz is just pissing into the wind.

Lord of The Rings Demystified

We are in Queenstown, New Zealand. Today we went on a trip to visit some of the locations where Lord of The Rings was filmed. One of them was the Arrow River, one bank of which was used for the Ford of Bruinen where the Nazgûl attempted to capture Frodo and the One Ring.

Our guide, Chris, showed us a still from the film and asked, “How many Nazgûl were there?”. “Nine!”, we answered inconcert. Chris counted the figures in the picture and got to ““11, maybe 12”. Nine riders, apparently, did not look sufficiently impressive, so Peter Jackson added some more.

Not only that, but as Chris explained, the riders’ parts were played by a bunch of Kiwi girls from the local pony club.

Maru’s Syndrome

I was reading this post on Jerry Coyne’s Why Evolution Is True web site. Maru’s Syndrome (defined by Jerry as the “inability not to enter any box”) is mentioned. I toddled over to DuckDuckGo to find out more. I found this great post: Box O’ Cats on Koi Scribblings—several minutes of cat-related entertainment.

I do miss having a cat in the house.

Walk Like an Epileptic Wife Beating Paedophile Prophet

This prophet was not a nice man—a very disturbing portrait of Muhammad.

Michael A. Sherlock (Author)

Disclaimer:Not all Muslim men marry children and beat their wives for the same reason that not all Jews stone disobedient children and murder people for collecting sticks on a Saturday.

If there is but a single religious figure from history that people should be discouraged from emulating, it’s the founder of the Islamic religion, Muhammad.  Should you possess the stomach to read through the compendium of medieval torture pornography that is the Qur’an and the Islamic Hadiths, you’ll see what I’m talking about.  Muhammad, according to his own religion’s sacred scripture, was a paedophile and a child-wife-beater.

The Hadith – The Secondary Pillar of Islam

As I will be drawing from the Hadith to make my case, I should first provide the reader with a little context.  The Islamic Hadith are regarded as the secondary pillar of Islam and they purport to record the sayings and doings of Muhammad…

The last words of Christopher Hitchens

I continue to read Hitchens for inspiration, and brush off those detractors who devalue his entire life simply because he was in favor of the Iraq war. The man spent his life battling totalitarianism and irrationality, and of course he was sometimes wrong. Who among us hasn’t been? But mark a few errors against the very full column of his brilliance, his fight for what he saw as true, his copious writings on so many topics, and the eloquence that inspired us all. It’s a bromide to say of someone who’s died that “they can’t be replaced,” but in the case of Hitchens it’s undeniably true.

A moving tribute from Professor Ceiling Cat.

Book Review: Why I Am Not A Christian

Dr Richard Carrier wrote Why I Am Not A Christian because he was sponsored to set out his reasons for not being one.

Discussing our experiences, we realized we’d both encountered many Christians like this, who color their entire perception of reality with the assumption that they have to be right, and therefore the evidence must somehow fit.
